In which dive boots do not adequate footwear make.

Mokoli’i is about 500 yards off shore of O’ahu, and the water is shallow enough that you could walk there in low tide (though still be in water up to your neck!)
Most people are more reasonable and kayak or SUP out. I’m not very reasonable, so to demonstrate that, I swam instead.

Glenn (my second shift counterpart) took a kayak, so I had the luxury of not being run over by a boat and also didn’t have to swim with lunch in tow.

It was ever so slightly more of a workout than I anticipated. But I had my snorkel, so I wasn’t too worried.

Our goal was the top, so we hiked around the edge of the island to find a trail.
Turned out, “trail” really just meant “up!”

3 points of contact, but volcanic rock is perfect for climbing. Lots of good hand-holds and not too slippery. Just… not so good for dive boots.

My legs were just the tiniest bit shaky from the swim on my way up, but I made it!

We climbed back down and stopped to play in the puddles before the return trip. I was trying to figure out how deep the fissure on this blowhole was.
And the best part is that I only barely had to swim the 500 yards back, and the surf did the rest!

(But next time I think I’ll stick with a kayak.)
