Going up!

Because we didn’t get enough exercise last week, this week Glenn and I climbed Koko Head! The airforce built bunkers on top of Koko Crater during WWII, and the rail track was ostensibly for supplies. (And anyone who didn’t want to climb to the top!)

Is it steep? Well, the total trail is about 1.8 miles and climbs 990 feet. And that includes the half mile from the parking lot to the bottom of the tracks! Glenn for perspective.

We made it to the top, huzzah! I feel like I should have a zipline or a mine cart to go back down in.

Bunker entrance. Very abandoned. Entry not advised.

The view from the top was exceptional. Just out to the right you can see the next island over, Molokai’i. More importantly, Glenn and I have started travelling in true island party style, which means it was PYOP; pack your own pineapple.

Nothing says planning ahead quite like bringing pineapples, rum, and tiny umbrellas to the top of a mountain for your picnic!

Plus, it numbs the pain of having to walk back down. Glenn insists that he wasn’t sore the next day, just ‘twingey’. I certainly wasn’t ready to go climb it again the next day! With friends like these, who needs a stairmaster?
